Time is very important in preserving evidence that would be helpful in your defense. The police have no obligation to interview people who might or would help you on your case. The need not tell what is really going on. THEY could MISINFORM YOU as to what is happening. They may have someone call you and be listening on the line. If you talk to someone who is not an attorney you may be making them a witness in the criminal case against you. Talking to inmates is also a dangerous thing to do, they would be all to willing to make up things against you to lessen their own jail time. Your conversation could be recorded when you have visitors at the jail or when you talk to people on the phone.
If you are not a U. S. citizen and are only a permanent resident or illegal alien, you need someone to represent you who is aware of certain criminal charges that can result in your loss of residence and /or loss of any hope of staying in the

What you say will be used against you.
